MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE

An artistic dialogue space about migraine

How can we make visible experiences for which words are often lacking?

"Making the Invisible Visible" is a participatory art project with the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel (UKSH) and patient representatives. Patients and healthcare professionals are collaboratively developing artistic forms of expression for the difficult-to-describe experiences of migraine. The project focuses on how art can open up new spaces for communication, understanding, and social visibility.

The project is funded by the European Culture and Health Platform, the Healing Culture Network and humaQ.

BACKGROUND

Migraine affects approximately 15% of the population and is one of the most common neurological disorders. Nevertheless, many aspects of the condition are insufficiently addressed in everyday life and in medical discussions.

Migraine is more than just pain. It encompasses perceptual changes, exhaustion, sensory overload, and social challenges. This project explores how artistic methods can help make these experiences visible and discussable.

PROCESS

A multi-part workshop series with a total of eight meetings is planned between autumn 2026 and January 2027.

Under the guidance of Dr. Andrea Geipel, patients and professionals are collaborating on artistic expressions of difficult-to-describe aspects of the illness. The project begins with accessible exercises for perception and exchange. Building on this foundation, paintings, photographs, and mixed-media works are created that make experiences with migraine visible. These works will then be used to develop an exhibition and accompanying texts. The exhibition will be presented at the UKSH (University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein) and aims to further the dialogue between those affected, professionals, and visitors.

In this project, the artistic method is not merely an accompanying element, but the central medium of communication. Especially in the case of migraines, where perception, stress, and communication often diverge, art creates a space in which subjective experience can be shared, condensed, and related to one another. This process not only results in artworks, but also in new spaces for dialogue and new forms of understanding.

The aim of the project is to deepen the understanding between patients and healthcare professionals and to explore new forms of communication beyond purely verbal conversations. Migraine should be experienced not only as a medical diagnosis, but as a multifaceted lived reality. The project's objective is not the therapeutic treatment of individual experiences of the illness, but rather an artistic and participatory exchange process in which personal perceptions are made visible and collectively experienced.
