2,818

March 2026

140x100 cm

The artwork is titled "2,818."

It refers to my initial analysis of the hours spent with migraine attacks in 2025. Only later did I realize that a calculation error had crept in. The actual number was 4,536 hours.

Part of me was annoyed by this. Another part recognized something very familiar in it:

Migraine attacks distort perception.

They make concentration difficult.

They make even seemingly clear numbers uncertain.

In this sense, the number 2,818 is also part of this work.

A number is precise and yet almost unimaginable. To make it visible, I represented each hour as a small square made of texture paste. Together, they form a grid across the entire surface of the canvas.

Towards the bottom, this order begins to dissolve. The structure becomes more irregular, the squares change size and shape. This creates a tension between system and chaos - similar to the nature of the illness itself.

The surface consists of hundreds of individual squares made of texture paste. Each field is different: sometimes thick, sometimes flat, sometimes with sharp edges or small points. Every hour spent with a migraine attack has its own unique quality.

The creative process was also lengthy and physically demanding. The large canvas could only be worked on while sitting on the floor. Over several days, grids were marked out with tape, texture paste was applied in small sections, and after long drying times, the paste was removed.

The work process required patience, strength, and endurance - much like daily life with migraine itself.

The finished work shows white structures on a white canvas. From a distance, it appears almost empty. Only up close do the individual hours become visible. This creates a shift in perception: the big picture and the details cannot be grasped simultaneously.
