in:visible

Object | MRI scan | Double-glazed frame
Date
April 2026
Size
52 x 42 cm
The work depicts MRI scans of the artist's brain, framed within a gold double-glass frame. The words "in" and "visible" are inscribed opposite each other on the two panes of glass. Only the space between the panes creates the complete word "in:visible."
The work explores the invisibility of migraines. Although modern imaging can reveal the body's interior, the condition itself remains invisible in the scans. MRI images show anatomical structures - but not pain, sensory overload, or exhaustion.
The space between the two panes of glass thus becomes a central element of the work. It represents the gap between medical visibility and personal experience, between what can be proven and what sufferers experience daily.
The gold frame alludes to the high value placed on diagnostic imaging in medicine. At the same time, the work makes its limitations visible. Not everything that causes illness can be visualized. Some conditions exist precisely in the tension between visibility and invisibility.
The work changes depending on the viewer's perspective. When photographed, either the word "in:visible" or the MRI scan becomes visible – never both at the same time. The work defies a single, definitive interpretation, thus alluding to the complexity of an illness that can never be fully grasped.
